Energy management has been a cornerstone of the London Health Sciences Centre's (LHSC) operational strategy since the 1970s. As a leading healthcare institution, LHSC understands that equitable energy management goes beyond cost savings; it plays a critical role in reducing environmental impacts such as air pollution, acid rain, and carbon emissions.
To achieve its energy goals, LHSC partnered with Abbott, leveraging our expertise in construction management and ongoing facility maintenance. This collaboration enabled LHSC to streamline the procurement, generation, and distribution of energy across its campus, ensuring efficiency and reliability.
Central to the partnership was the development of a cutting-edge heating plant. With Abbott’s Project Management, Risk Management, and Life Cycle Costing support, the facility not only generates electricity but also provides steam and power to other facilities in the surrounding area. This sustainable approach maximizes resource utilization while reducing overall environmental impact.
The project posed a high level of complexity and risk. From intricate design requirements to the challenges of integrating new systems into an active healthcare environment, the Abbott team faced numerous hurdles. By employing a methodical and innovative approach, we navigated these challenges to deliver a transformative solution.
The successful completion of the project marked a new chapter for Victoria Hospital and LHSC at large. Abbott’s solutions turned their best potential into reality, setting the stage for decades of sustainable energy management. Through this collaboration, LHSC continues to demonstrate leadership in energy management, blending fiscal responsibility with environmental stewardship to support its mission of delivering exceptional care.
